Meanwhile, Cam has gathered a handful of comrades and is on his way into the Red to rescue his queen. But not all of his friends can be trusted, and not all of them will make it back alive.

My Review:

This is the second book in the Sovereign series by Josie Jaffrey and it definitely did not disappoint! In the Guilded King (book 1) Jaffrey built the plot line and the history and in this book she didn’t need to do that so it started full force. Jaffrey definitely hit the ground running and as a reader I could really tell how much she enjoyed writing this book! I was hooked by every word and sentence and I couldn’t put it down. Literally, it took me less than 12 hours to finish it and that was only because I had to sleep in the middle.

Like the first book, the plot line was extremely interesting. Jaffrey managed to take a common story line (vampires and the humans that serve them) and truly made it fun to read! In the first book Julia is quiet and scared and doesn’t want to cause trouble. In this book she’s gotten her backbone and has started fighting for herself. She’s become a strong independent woman that made me rutting for her the whole time. I also enjoyed the relationship she had with new (and old characters) throughout the book. The only person I had a slight issue with was Lucas. In the first book he kept to himself but he knew what he wanted and was convinced he would do anything to make it happen. In this book he didn’t really have a backbone and just wanted to please everyone else. In the end he made up for it and I’m excited to hear what happens next. I just wish he had been a stronger male character from the beginning.

Slight spoiler (but this is the second book so it’s hard not to talk about the first)… At the end of the second book Lucas leaves Julia to go into the Red. He knew what he was doing by leaving Julia in a city that was crumbling. At the start of this book Julia was upset about his leaving and she didn’t understand why he did it. But instead of sulking and letting it ruin her life she moves forward. When their paths cross she doesn’t just give into his big brown eyes. It would be easy for an author to write like that but Jaffrey really thought about how the character would react. I know I would be pissed and wondering why he would leave me in that situation. I don’t want to spoil anything by saying how it turned out but I like how Jaffrey handled it and I’m excited to see how they end up.

I will admit when I first started this book I was extremely confused. I’m sure that’s because I read too much and books start to blend together. It’s been about 2 months since I’ve read the Guilded King and for the life of me I couldn’t remember what happened. (Why can’t books have a “last time on…” like TV shows do?) I didn’t really start understanding everything until about half way through. I wish Jaffrey had recapped the first book a little better as I was reading but it didn’t take away from how much I loved the book.

The ending was absolutely perfect! It would be easy for it to be the last book in the series however it was also left open for the chance to keep going. Please please please!!! Jaffrey keep going! I want to know more and I want to see what happens to each of the characters. I’m also intrigued after reading the epilogue and want to know more about that story.
