Goodreads Summary

Descendants of the Amazons, the Scythians work alongside prominent governments but answer to no one. Warriors living on the fringe of civilization, they live by one credo: Strength through Equality. Power through Knowledge.

Nya Thalestris is the brightest Scythian of her generation. Strong, capable, ruthless, she is sure to earn a spot in the Trials, a time-honored mating ritual responsible for the evolution of her species.

Abducted by their sworn enemy, the Drahzda, Nya is forever altered and spirals out of control. The Society sends in Jax Nickius. Infamous psychologist and one of the most brutal warriors of their kind, he discovers triggers planted in Nya’s mind. As Nya solidifies her spot in the Trials, Jax develops a plan to help—while pursuing her as a mate. But, Nya’s attraction to Jax is at war with her instinct to never let anyone get too close.

During the Trials, Nya’s repressed memories surface, revealing a new enemy—one from inside the consulate walls—and a traitorous alliance on the horizon that could irrevocably change the course of history.

Since before the Bronze Age, the Society has managed to safeguard humanity from itself … until now.

My Review:

This is the first book I’ve read by Elizabeth Isaacs and I can’t wait to read more. I was hooked from the very beginning. I loved the characters and how they were developed. Each had a unique personality and it was clear from the way they interacted with each other. This is also the first book in a while where I truly felt every possible emotion. Several times I almost threw my phone across the room, I cried (maybe multiple times…I’ll never tell) and I caught myself smiling like a crazy person on more than one occasion.

I thought the plot line was new and fresh. The Scythians are descendants of Amazon warriors and they are known for their strength and knowledge. I thought it was really interesting to have a government centered on the women and they showed their “worth” by how strong and powerful they are. Nya is a part of the mating ritual called the Trials and she isn’t like everyone else who thinks they need to find a mate to be successful in life. Little does she know the reason is actually because of being captured years ago. It’s about Nya’s journey of self-discovery while trying to stay true to her heritage.

Nya was captured years ago and she doesn’t remember. Since she’s returned her mind and body prevent her from getting close to anyone. And any physical connection is almost impossible for her. Because her memories are gone she doesn’t know why she’s like this but just assumes it’s how she’s always been. Her therapist Jax is an instructor at her school and has been the only one who has gotten close to breaking her shell. When Nya has to enter these trials and take 5 chosen it’s become her worst nightmare. When her memories start to return she understands everything and can’t bring herself to hurt the 5 men who want to be her husband. I can’t get into the romance of this book too much because I don’t want to give anything away but I absolutely love each of the 5 guys she chose. Each one was extremely different but I could see her with anyone of them. That being said there’s only one I could see her spending the rest of her life with and I absolutely loved their relationship. I hope I get to see more of it in future books!

I will admit when I first read the synopsis I was worried the book was going to be too short for the amount of story. The synopsis covers a lot of details and even though a lot happened in the book, Isaacs was able to cover everything and I never felt confused or felt like something was missing. It was an easy book to read and one I wish I could keep reading. I think I read somewhere that this was going to be the first book in a new series but haven’t seen anything to prove that. So here’s my plea… Please Elizabeth Isaacs!! I want to know more about this wonderful world and see what happens to Nya in the future!

In the stages of the trials, Nya has 5 “chosen” and at the end of the book she has to choose who will be her mate for life. Obviously, I can’t spoil that for you. So, I’ll leave it at this, I love how the story ends. It’s easy to see the story just ending here and leaving it up to the readers imagination to figure out the rest. However, (and what I’m hoping) it would also be easy for Isaacs to keep writing the story so we know exactly what happens to our characters.
